Reflections on Public Choice

President's Letter
August 2005

Dear PCS Colleague,

The reports I received about our Annual Meeting this past spring were, by and large, positive. I want, especially, to thank our excellent plenary speakers—Paul Edelman, Michel Balinski, and Hervé Moulin—and Jo Ann Burgess for providing outstanding organizational support for the meetings.

Our experiment with having no formal discussants drew a mixed reaction. For next year’s meeting, we will revert to having discussants, but they will be the speakers themselves on each panel who will discuss each others’ papers. We will also limit each person to presenting one paper at the meeting, though coauthors may present additional papers.

*****

Because of our good experience with the Intercontinental New Orleans, we’ve booked next year’s meeting there, whose dates are Thursday, March 30–Sunday, April 2, 2006 with registration beginning on Thursday. We have arranged with the hotel for a simple method of booking and payment for non-US participants.

The 2007 meeting will be joint with the European Public Choice Society, to be held in Amsterdam beginning with a plenary session on the evening of Thursday, March 29 through Sunday, April 1, so please mark your calendars for that event as well.

*****

By tradition, the presidency of the Public Choice Society alternates every two years between a political scientist and an economist. Continuing this tradition but departing from another tradition, I have proposed that the next president, who will be an economist, be chosen in a competitive election that includes at least two candidates.

I am therefore soliciting nominations of economists to be candidates for president for 2006–8. In consultation with past presidents of the Society, I will construct a short list of candidates. We will then conduct an election, the details of which will be spelled out soon.

You will be receiving a formal call for papers within the next few weeks. We hope as many of you can attend as possible.

Best wishes,
Steven J. Brams
